In mid-April, 2023, the Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America East, known collectively as the WGA, received strike authorization from their membership as part of their ongoing contract negotiations with companies represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP - this group of companies includes such media giants as Paramount, Sony, Disney, CBS, FOX, NBC, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon). As of midnight on May 1, an agreement had not been reached and the strike began.
This strike will not affect strictly Canadian productions, however, US productions in Canada that rely on scripts from WGA writers could potentially be affected. This may mean a pause on productions already in motion or a delayed start date for such productions. As of May 2, there is no specific information on productions in this jurisdiction that may be affected.
